To address the shortage of skilled professionals driven by the rising number of illnesses requiring treatment, the healthcare sector is steadily digitizing processes that were previously performed manually. As a result, new IT security requirements are emerging, both in relation to the especially sensitive patient data stored in hospitals and to society’s reliance on a robust and resilient healthcare system. At the same time, the growing use of artificial intelligence is contributing to an increase in both the range and the sophistication of cyberattacks. According to relevant reports, healthcare is among the primary targets of cybercriminals.
The Working Group “Digital Security in Healthcare” bridges the fields of digital security and healthcare. In support of healthcare provision in Germany, the group focuses on the following priorities:
- increasing awareness of digital security in healthcare and of current developments in cyber threats;
- providing a platform for expert exchange among stakeholders and interest groups from industry and academia;
- advancing digital patient safety through applied research on new use cases;
- fostering visibility, collaboration, and networking at the EU level with leading international institutes.
Initial Thematic Priorities
Platform for sharing information on lessons learned before, during, and after cyberattacks
Early detection of cyberattacks in healthcare;
Information sharing for threat intelligence;
IT and AI security in healthcare.
Actions
Organization of workshops, hands-on formats, academic colloquia, and presentation series
Regular meetings, including online meetings, for exchange and discussion
Overview of relevant publications, events, best practices, and other relevant materials on the topic
